With the addition of USB-C to the entire iPhone 15 series, Apple today took a significant step towards retiring the Lightning port. A new model of the AirPods Pro with a USB-C charging case has been added to the AirPods portfolio, which has also seen some changes from the firm. Continue reading for information on the current AirPods lineup following Apple’s announcement.

What are the new AirPods Pro 2’s new audio features?

What are the AirPods Pro 2's new audio features?

Adaptive Audio: According to Apple, the new listening mode combines transparency mode and active noise cancellation in a dynamic way, altering the noise control based on the ambient noise of the user. I found it helpful during my initial tests to tune out background noise and adjust to various settings when I moved from my home along a busy high street to the quiet environs of my gym.

I felt confident and aware of the traffic and sirens roaring around me as they approached the neighboring A&E hospital. I walked on a path that ran alongside a busy main road, thanks to the adaptive technology that provided me with a smooth experience. When I arrived at my destination, the AirPods Pro 2 switched without my knowledge to drown out the noisy acoustics in the gym cafe and the frequent talk and din.

Conversation Awareness: In a similar vein, adaptive audio at the coffee shop dampened the bustling energy of the patrons, but full transparency mode seemed to activate the instant I approached the barista to place my order. The Apple version seems to function quite similarly to Sony’s Speak-to-Chat. Given how easily the technology activates while I’m wearing the Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds, it’s refreshing to note that it may not be nearly as sensitive as Sony’s version.

Personalized Volume: According to Apple, personalized volume continuously adjusts the listening experience for users in accordance with their preferences. I’m not aware of any volume adjustments based on the environment and my volume settings at this time, but maybe that’s the goal, and I simply need to test the functionality out in a larger variety of settings over the next several weeks.

Sound Quality: Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 have a consistently great listening experience, and the iOS 17 audio upgrade seems to improve upon that. Apple hasn’t formally informed me of any changes to the sound quality, but we do know that some improvements have been made to the new AirPods Pro 2 USB-C to make them compatible with a new lossless audio protocol for Apple’s Pro Vision. You may be sure that no matter what changes Apple made to the internal architecture, the sound quality was unaffected. In fact, I believe they might even sound better.

It’s far too early for me to make any additional comments until I have had a chance to conduct extensive listening tests with the final version of iOS 17 installed. However, after listening to some of my favorite songs early on, it’s possible that the new AirPods Pro 2 sound a little bit better, with even more detail to savor.

Apple also unveiled an updated model of the AirPods Pro 2 that includes a USB-C charging case along with the iPhone 15. The business notes that utilizing a single cable, it is now simpler to recharge all of your Apple gadgets, from the Mac to the AirPods.

A new charging case is included with the updated AirPods Pro 2, but this is an interesting addition. Apple has acknowledged on its website that the new AirPods Pro 2 (yeah, that’s a strange name) are IP54 certified for added dust protection. The original model is IPX4 certified, although this only ensures a limited degree of water resistance.

The updated AirPods Pro 2 has another minor tweak. This is so that, in accordance with Apple, the new AirPods that were unveiled today may play lossless music “with ultra-low latency” when combined with an Apple Vision Pro.

On Apple’s website, customers can now pre-order AirPods Pro 2 with the USB-C charging case. They are offered for the same $249 cost as the prior model. Remember that Apple won’t be selling the USB-C charging case for older AirPods Pro versions separately.

The older AirPods Pro 2 with the Lightning charging case has been discontinued, it should be noted.

Remember Apple’s wireless earphones’ original AirPods 2 design? The AirPods with the old H1 chip and no Find My features or haptic controls were first released in 2019 and are still on the market today.

Apple has nevertheless kept the AirPods 2 in stock for people looking for wireless earphones that are more reasonably priced. It still costs $129 at Apple, and it includes a Lightning charging case that is incompatible with MagSafe. They are available on Amazon for just $99 each.

Conclusion

Apple has added USB-C to the iPhone 15 lineup and updated the AirPods lineup, featuring a new version of the AirPods Pro with a USB-C charging case. The AirPods Pro 2 now features adaptive audio, which dynamically blends transparency mode and active noise cancellation, adjusting noise control based on the user’s environment. This feature allows users to block out background sounds and adapt to different environments. Adaptive Audio also works similarly to Sony’s Speak-to-Chat but is less sensitive.

Users’ listening experiences are automatically improved with personalized volume based on their preferences over time. The iOS 17 audio update looks to make the AirPods Pro 2 even better, with some enhancements to make it compatible with a new lossless audio protocol for Apple’s Pro Vision. Sound quality hasn’t been sacrificed, and the updated AirPods Pro 2 may sound slightly improved with even greater levels of detail. The revised AirPods Pro 2 is also IP54-certified for additional protection against dust and can play lossless audio “with ultra-low latency” when paired with an Apple Vision Pro. Customers can pre-order the AirPods Pro 2 with the USB-C charging case on Apple’s website for the same price as the previous version.
