iPhone 16 release date speculation, leaks, price predictions, and more

October 14, 2023

Even though Apple’s iPhone 15 series is still relatively new on the market, speculation surrounding the iPhone 16 lineup has already started. A recent report claims that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 0.2-inch bigger display than the iPhone 15 Pro models, even though the devices won’t be available for purchase for another year. They might be equipped with Qualcomm’s most recent cellular modem for enhanced 5G performance. The Snapdragon X70 modem is reportedly still used by Apple on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. Also rumoured for the Pro versions is Wi-Fi 7 connectivity and a possible new ultra-wide lens for the back.

The well-known tech researcher Jeff Pu has released a fresh batch of speculations regarding the upcoming iPhone 16 series, including some of the significant upgrades to the Pro and Pro Max models. From the Wi-Fi 6e-equipped iPhone 15 Pro models, the Pro iPhones of the following year will feature Wi-Fi 7 connections. Additionally, the 16 Pro and Pro Max will get a Qualcomm Snapdragon X75 modem, which should deliver higher 5G download speeds and longer battery life than the X70 found on the iPhone 15 generation.

Both 16 Pro models will include 48MP ultrawide cameras that have been updated, and the 16 Pro is anticipated to acquire a 12MP tetra-prism lens with a 5x optical zoom that is already present on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Due to the bigger size of the future iPhone Pros—the 16 Pro is anticipated to have a 6.3-inch screen, while the 16 Pro Max is anticipated to have a 6.9-inch display—the new zoom sensor will be installed.

Regarding the standard iPhone 16, Jeff Pu predicts that it will include 8GB of RAM, the same twin cameras as the iPhone 15, a modest improvement to Wi-Fi 6e, and a less potent version of the A17 Pro CPU present on the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

iPhone 16 Release Date Speculation

iPhone 16 Release Date Speculation
  • launch is anticipated for the first half of September 2024.
  • The shipping date will most likely be one to two weeks later.

It should go without saying that since Apple has only recently introduced the iPhone 15 line, we are unable to predict with certainty the release date of the iPhone 16 line. Having said that, we can draw some conclusions from previous Apple forms.

We anticipate Apple revealing the release date for the iPhone 16 at its yearly September launch event in 2024 if the firm follows tradition. Although the precise date of that event won’t likely be revealed until sometime in August 2024, we can use the dates of previous Apple events to guess when the iPhone 16 might be released.

For its yearly iPhone launch, Apple typically chooses the first or second week of September and typically chooses a Tuesday, while the corporation occasionally chooses a Wednesday. The Apple September event for 2023 (read: iPhone 15) took place on September 12. All four of the iPhone 15 variants unveiled at the time went on sale just over a week later, on September 15.

As both of these dates are Tuesdays, September 3 or 10 are the most likely launch dates for the iPhone 16 in 2024; however, September 4 and 11 are also possibilities. The iPhone 16 will likely start shipping a week after pre-orders open, similar to the iPhone 15.

iPhone 16 price predictions

iPhone 16 price predictions
  • Prices for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 may be related.

The basic iPhone 15, Apple’s entry-level model, costs $799, £799, and AU$1,499, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the company’s most costly model, costs $1,199, £1,399, and AU$2,099.

The iPhone 16 line could replicate these numbers, but some analysts believe that it will be less expensive than the iPhone 15. This is due to rumours that Apple may change the process it employs to make iPhone chipsets at some point in the upcoming year, which may affect iPhone costs for final consumers.

It’s also important to keep in mind that Apple could release the first iPhone with the Ultra brand in 2024. Analysts now estimate that an iPhone 16 Ultra will launch next year in place of the iPhone 15 Ultra, which was initially expected to replace the iPhone 15 Pro Max this year.

However, it is almost probable that Apple’s first Ultra iPhone will be the most costly iPhone ever. It is yet unclear if this Ultra iPhone will debut in addition to or instead of an iPhone 16 Pro Max.

iPhone 16: Possible Screen Sizes

iPhone 16: Possible Screen Sizes
  • Pro models now have larger panels and a different aspect ratio.
  • The regular model is probably going to stay at 6.1 inches.

We’ve heard reports that the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max may have the largest screens of any iPhone to date.

According to frequent Apple insider Ross Young, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Ultra (or iPhone 16 Pro Max, as it may be named) will have screens that are 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively. Both devices will also have a new 19.6:9 aspect ratio. They would be the tallest and smallest iPhones ever as a result.

A second rumour has now confirmed the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch sizes, while a third leak has confirmed that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max screens will be 0.2 inches larger than those of their predecessors. For comparison, the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screens on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, respectively.

The iPhone 16 Ultra will be noticeably larger and slimmer than the same model in the iPhone 15 series, as shown in the mock-ups below, which were produced by 9to5Mac.

Why may Apple be considering making its already-strong iPhones even beefier? Well, the bigger screens on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Ultra should allow for some significant photography improvements (more on these later).

Although these size adjustments may eventually trickle down to the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus in 2025, Ross Young observes that the basic iPhone 16 will maintain the same 19.5:9 aspect ratio as today’s top iPhones.

In addition to the differences in proportions, the iPhone 16 line’s screens may be brighter than those of its predecessors, at least when viewed from the front. According to reports, Apple is thinking of implementing technologies that would enable this while also using less energy, perhaps extending battery life.

It wouldn’t be a full improvement, though, as this would reportedly raise the cost of manufacturing the phones and make the screen appear less brilliant when viewed from the side.

iPhone 16 Design Rumours

  • According to rumours, the basic iPhone 16 will include a camera arrangement similar to the iPhone 11.
  • Face ID parts can be concealed below the display.
  • Each model might have a new “Capture” button.

Although there aren’t many iPhone 16 design rumours to date, there are a few that have already surfaced.

The placement of Face ID components on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max is mentioned in the first. Both phones would have their Face ID components concealed beneath the screen, similar to how many of the top Android phones currently feature under-display fingerprint scanners, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and South Korean news source The Elec. As the selfie camera sensor will apparently still be visible, this won’t totally remove the cut-out, but it might allow Apple to shrink it down to a tiny punch-hole module.

The Elec asserts that this design modification will only serve as a band-aid for Apple, whose ultimate objective is to create an iPhone display that is entirely continuous and devoid of cut-outs.

The second iPhone 16 design rumour only mentions the basic iPhone 16. The iPhone 16 will have a vertical camera orientation rather than the diagonal arrangement present on every iPhone since the iPhone 13, claims Twitter leaker @URedditor. In 2024, according to @URedditor, “this will make the device instantly recognisable as the latest model”.

It seems reasonable that Apple may change the look of the iPhone 16 by, well, going back to what it knows as the ordinary iPhone 15, which retains the same camera configuration as the iPhone 14, despite the addition of a 48MP main lens.

The third (and most exciting) rumour we’ve heard about the iPhone 16’s design is true for all of the available models. A second capacitive button, internally referred to as the “Capture” button, will be present on Apple’s upcoming handsets, according to people involved with the development of the iPhone 16 range. The source makes no mention of the use of this new button, but its name raises the possibility that it has anything to do with the iPhone 16’s camera features.

Capacitive (or solid-state) buttons do not move when pressed in place of mechanical buttons. Instead, they have haptic engines that emit vibrations to provide physical feedback. Given that the Home button on the iPhone SE (2022) and the trackpads on more recent MacBook models are capacitive buttons, it is logical to assume that the new “Capture” button will have a similar tactile feel.

The iPhone 15 Pro was speculated to have capacitive volume and power buttons at the beginning of the iPhone 15 rumour cycle. Apple apparently changed its mind about including capacitive buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro in April 2023 because the company needed more time to create the haptic engines needed to power them. Currently, it seems that these capacitive buttons will in fact make their debut on the iPhone 16 line, albeit in the form of a completely new button as opposed to updated volume and power buttons.

iPhone 16 Camera Rumours

iPhone 16 Camera Rumours

  • For both Pro models, a periscope lens
  • Periscope lens described as “super-telephoto” for Pro Max
  • Also rumoured: a 48MP ultra-wide camera.

Regarding cameras, early reports indicate that the basic iPhone 16 will feature the same 48MP main camera and 12MP ultra-wide dual-sensor configuration as the iPhone 15.

The iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, and/or iPhone 16 Ultra are anticipated to receive the most significant camera upgrades, as is customary. In fact, the iPhone 16 Pro may introduce the periscope zoom lens to the mid-sized iPhone market for the first time in 2023. This function is presently reserved for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

In September 2023, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the iPhone 16 Pro would inherit the “tetraprism” periscope camera technology used by the iPhone 15 Pro Max. In October, analyst Jeff Pu claimed the same thing regarding the iPhone 16 Pro.

Periscope cameras, so named because they resemble the equipment found on submarines and other military ships, effectively let the viewer zoom in extremely close while maintaining image quality. A periscope camera uses mirrors to fit more lens components and, thus, a greater zoom length into the constrained space of a phone’s camera module. In addition, it can be positioned transversely.

This heavier periscope camera will allegedly fit on the larger 6.3-inch screen of the iPhone 16 Pro, as was noted in the article’s section on displays.

However, parity between the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max (or iPhone 16 Ultra) won’t necessarily be achieved with the inclusion of a periscope zoom lens on the iPhone 16 Pro.

According to rumours, this 6.9-inch iPhone could indeed come equipped with a periscope camera that is referred to as a “super-telephoto” lens. The phrase “super telephoto” is used to designate lenses that have focal lengths greater than 300mm. These lenses allow photographers to take up-close pictures of far-off sights and topics, such as animals and sporting events.

The super-telephoto periscope camera would be a potentially game-changing improvement for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which is already among the greatest camera phones on the market. For example, the 5x telephoto zoom camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a maximum focal length of 120mm, while the 10x telephoto zoom camera on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has a maximum focal length of 230mm.

A 48MP ultra-wide camera is believed to be included in Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro models, which would be a significant upgrade from the 12MP ultra-wide camera now found in the Pro and Max models of the iPhone 15.

By no means are Apple’s current top iPhones’ ultra-wide setups subpar; the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max frequently capture vivid, brilliant wide-angle images. However, the iPhone 16 Pro’s anticipated 48MP ultra-wide lens should record a lot more light, producing even more stunning low-light images.

Since the 48MP main cameras on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max already combine data from four pixels into one “super pixel” for better low-light image capture, it is likely that the 48MP ultra-wide lens on the iPhone 16 Pro will use the same “pixel binning” technology.

iPhone 16: Possible Features

  • The iPhone 16 is likely to use the A17 Pro chipset.
  • Probability of an A18 Pro/Bionic chipset for Pro models
  • overall increased battery efficiency

Although there isn’t much information available regarding the processors that will power the iPhone 16 series, we may make some very certain guesses based on past Apple behaviour. Apple wants to modify its chipset production process in 2024, for example.

We’re reasonably confident that the standard iPhone 16 will inherit the A17 Pro from the iPhone 15 Pro, while the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max get an A18 Pro/Bionic that has not yet been given a name, given that the standard iPhone 15 inherited the A16 Bionic chipset from the standard iPhone 14 Pro, and both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max received Apple’s brand-new A17 Pro chipset.

Any chipset will undoubtedly improve the performance and durability of the iPhone 16 range, but because Apple’s processors have improved so much in recent years, any improvements will probably seem insignificant in actual use.

According to a leak, each of the four iPhone 16 variants would contain 8GB of RAM. For the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, that would be an upgrade, but the Pro versions would remain unchanged.

According to a leak, the iPhone 16 Pro models may support Wi-Fi 7 and contain a new 5G modem, which would result in faster Wi-Fi and 5G speeds than the ordinary iPhone 16 models.

We haven’t heard anything about the iPhone 16 line’s batteries yet, but given that all four iPhone 15 models were rumoured to feature a new stacked battery design similar to that found in electric vehicles, we’re confident that this technology will be found in Apple’s 2024 iPhones instead.

We anticipate the iPhone 16 series to offer longer battery life than the iPhone 15 line because, in theory, stacked batteries can be more compactly packaged and deliver a better energy density than current mobile batteries.

According to reports, the iPhone 15 line’s real battery capacity is as follows (Apple hasn’t yet confirmed these numbers):

  • 3,877 mAh in the iPhone 15, compared to 3,279 mAh in the iPhone 14.
  • 4,912 mAh in the iPhone 15 Plus, against 4,325 mAh in the iPhone 14 Plus.
  • 3,650 mAh for the iPhone 15 Pro (up from 3,200 mAh for the iPhone 14 Pro)
  • 4,852 mAh in the iPhone 15 Pro Max vs.iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 4,323 mAh battery.

According to logic, analogous iPhone 16 models from the following year will have comparable battery capacities, and we anticipate Apple will include reverse wireless charging capability across the board for the whole iPhone 16 lineup.

Oh, and according to new EU requirements that become legally obligatory in 2024, every iPhone 16 model will feature a USB-C port rather than a Lightning port, just like the iPhone 15 series did.

Additionally, given how the iPhone 16 differs from earlier models, we anticipate AI to play a significant part in its operation. Additionally, some incorporation of Apple Vision Pro also seems inevitable. However, we haven’t heard anything about either topic yet.

Last but not least, the Wi-Fi 7 standard, which offers faster speeds, lower latency, and more dependable communication, may support Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro models.

Rumours suggest that Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup will feature a 0.2-inch larger display, Qualcomm’s latest cellular modem for improved 5G performance, and Wi-Fi 7 connectivity. The Pro models will also have a new ultra-wide lens on the rear. The 16 Pro and Pro Max will have updated 48MP ultrawide cameras, a 12MP tetra-prism lens with 5x optical zoom, and a larger 6.3-inch screen.

The vanilla iPhone 16 will likely have a less powerful version of the A17 Pro chip with 8GB of RAM, dual cameras, and a minor upgrade to Wi-Fi 6e. The iPhone 16 is expected to launch in the first half of September 2024, with shipping expected to begin a week after pre-orders go live. Apple typically releases the iPhone 16 at the 2024 edition of its annual September launch event, which usually takes place on a Tuesday. The actual date of the event is unlikely to be announced until August 2024.

Apple’s iPhone 15 pricing could potentially be influenced by the iPhone 16, with the cheapest model starting at $799 and the most expensive at $1,199. However, some analysts predict that the iPhone 16 may be cheaper due to Apple’s upcoming switch to manufacturing chipsets next year. The first Ultra-branded iPhone is expected to debut in 2024, making it almost certain that the first Ultra iPhone will be the most expensive iPhone ever.

The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max may feature larger displays and a new aspect ratio, making them the tallest and narrowest iPhones ever. Camera upgrades are also rumoured, with the standard iPhone 16 remaining with the same 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The iPhone 16 line might also feature brighter screens, but this would increase production costs and make the screen appear less bright when viewed from the side. Design rumours include an iPhone 11-style camera layout, hidden Face ID components, and a new ‘Capture’ button.

When is the iPhone 16 launching?

Although the release of next-generation phones is anticipated for September 2024, rumours about a phone that won’t be available until next year are already circulating. Even though it’s still early, rumours of a RAM upgrade for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are already circulating.

What can we expect from the iPhone 16?

In September 2024, the iPhone 16 is anticipated to be on sale. What rumoured features will the iPhone 16 have? A tweaked A17 chip, an A18 chip for the Pro versions, solid state buttons, under-display FaceID, and high refresh rate displays are all anticipated for the iPhone 16 series.

What is the price of the iPhone 16 Plus?

The estimated cost of the iPhone 16 Plus in India is Rs. 87,990. 128 GB of internal storage and 6 GB of RAM are anticipated.

Will the iPhone 16 design change?

It is hardly surprising that the current 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch display sizes won’t change if the phone’s overall proportions remain the same. Furthermore, this suggests that the iPhone 16 and Plus won’t include the thinner bezels that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max brought.
