MACBOOK PRO 14-INCH (2023) RELEASE DATE AND PRICE

Starting on January 24, the price of the MacBook Pro 14-inch is $1,999. A 10-core M2 Pro CPU, a 16-core GPU, 16GB of unified memory, and 512GB of SSD storage are all included at that price.

The M2 Pro model, which costs $2,499 and has a 12-core CPU, 19-core GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage, is the next up. Alternatively, you might go for the $3,099 M2 Max model, which has the same CPU but a GPU with 30 cores and 32GB of RAM.

The maximum RAM for the M2 Pro model is 32GB, but if you upgrade to the M2 Max processor with a 38-core GPU, you can get up to 96GB. That alone is a $800 add-on. For a cool $1,800, you can also upgrade to 8TB of storage.

MACBOOK PRO 14-INCH (2023) DESIGN

MACBOOK PRO 14-INCH (2023) DESIGN

It’s a positive thing that the MacBook Pro 14-inch retains the same appearance as its predecessor. The identical incredibly sturdy, square-shaped metal chassis is offered in Silver and Space Gray. I just wish Apple had provided more color options, like the MacBook Air M2’s Midnight Blue. Is it not possible for a laptop with enough capability to launch rockets to have any fun factor?

I still find myself appreciating the small details on this laptop, such as the grooved front lip that makes it easy to open with one hand, the Touch ID button that makes it simple to sign on quickly, and the tastefully carved “MacBook Pro” on the bottom of the device.

The MacBook Pro 14-inch weighs 3.6 pounds (3.6 pounds for the M2 Max version) and measures 12.31 x 8.71 x 0.61 inches, making it quite heavy for a 14-inch laptop. For example, the HP Spectre x360 14 weighs three pounds, while the Huawei Matebook X Pro weighs two pounds, yet neither device has as much power.

The notch that holds the 1080p camera at the top of the display is the single significant flaw in the design. It is a little distracting and breaks up an otherwise beautiful screen. However, you eventually become accustomed to it. The next time around, I wouldn’t mind if Apple further reduced the bezels.

And one more thing. Even while I enjoy that the keyboard has a Touch ID button, I wish Apple had included a Face ID sensor with the MacBook Pro. Many Windows laptops allow you to log in just by glancing at the front of the device; some even can recognize you as you approach the notebook. That would seem like a no-brainer feature for a laptop this expensive.

MACBOOK PRO 14-INCH (2023) PORTS

If you need anything more than simply Thunderbolt/USB-C connectors, the MacBook Pro 14-inch is still the portable MacBook to purchase. In addition to the three Thunderbolt 4 ports—which are a must for photographers and videographers—you also get an SD card slot and an HDMI port.

The MacBook Pro 14-inch supports the HDMI 2.1 standard, which means that the HDMI connector can now handle up to 8K resolution at 60Hz on an external monitor. Alternately, a 4K monitor at up to 240Hz can be connected.

Keep in mind that the M2 Max chip can drive up to four monitors, while the M2 Pro chip can only handle a total of two external displays.

MACBOOK PRO 14-INCH (2023) DISPLAY AND AUDIO

The mini-LED display on the MacBook Pro 14-inch is undoubtedly among the finest on any notebook. It has a smooth 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate and is vivid and brilliant. I became so engrossed in this panel while seeing the Mandalorian season 3 teaser that I momentarily forgot I was also meant to be snapping photographs while I was gathering some b-roll for our review film.

The shining silver of the Mandalorian’s helmet caught my attention in the teaser, and in one frame, I could even make out tiny water droplets on it. In the meantime, Greef Karga’s (Carl Weathers) gorgeous gold textured cape stood out. In a darker environment, I could even see the tiny hairs on Grogu’s head.

In our lab testing, the MacBook Pro 14-inch display performed admirably, first and foremost in terms of brightness. Using our light meter, we saw as much as 1,447 nits for 10% of the display and 1,081 nits for 100% of the screen when watching HDR video. In contrast, the 13-inch MacBook Pro has a net rating of just less than 500.

The screen of the MacBook Pro 14-inch covered 83.4% of the more difficult DCI-P3 color space and registered 117.7% of the sRGB color range. In the two tests, the Dell XPS 15 scored a little higher 122.7% and 86.9%, respectively.

However, Apple’s laptop’s display has somewhat more accurate colors; with a Delta-E score of 0.19 (perfect = 0), it is slightly more accurate. XPS 15 recorded a 0.22.

With four force-cancelling woofers and two tweeters, the MacBook Pro 14-inch’s six-speaker sound system produced a tremendous sound for that same trailer. Even at maximum power, every sound, including the wind instruments and the Mandalorian discourse and laser fire, was clear and distinct.

Using Spotify, the MacBook Pro 14-inch handled The Weekend’s “Blinding Lights” with skill, delivering a powerful beat and high-pitched vocals. A medium-sized room was filled with music as soon as Post Malone’s song “I Like You” began, with each rhythm snapping in her voice. This is a work-and-play system.

MACBOOK PRO 14-INCH (2023) PERFORMANCE

One thing is certain, in my opinion. Whether you choose the M2 Pro or M2 Max variant, the MacBook Pro 14-inch can easily handle everything you throw at it. If you want greater graphics power or performance for multimedia productions, go for the M2 Max.

The M2 Pro chip is equipped with 512GB of storage, 16GB of unified memory, and a 10-core CPU and GPU. With an insane $4,099 price tag, and an insane amount of processing power—12 cores on the CPU, 38 cores on the GPU, 64GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage—Apple sent us a version to test.

We also have the test results for the M2 Pro variant of this machine, which is more expensive than the entry-level model, thanks to our sister site Laptop Mag. For $3,299, it has a 12-core CPU, 19-core GPU, 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage.

We also examined two powerful Windows laptops for comparison. For $2,299, you can get a Dell XPS 15 with a 12th generation Intel Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of SSD, and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics. In all fairness, we were unable to test the speedier Core i9 model. Remember that more recent 13th-generation Intel CPUs are in the works as well.

Another professional laptop we evaluated was the $2,868 HP EliteBook 840 G9, which has a 12th-generation Core i7 VPro CPU, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of SSD, and Intel Iris X graphics.

MACBOOK PRO 14-INCH 2023: GRAPHICS AND GAMING

A 16-core GPU is the first of many graphics choices available with the MacBook Pro 14-inch. Benchmark performance differs between the 19-core GPU found in the M2 Pro chip and the 38-core GPU found in the M2 Max chip.

MACBOOK PRO 14-INCH (2023) BATTERY LIFE

Our study indicates that the MacBook Pro 14-inch M2 Pro has excellent battery life. The epic 14 hours and 2 minutes of continuous web surfing at 150 nits of screen brightness comprised the Tom’s Guide Battery test. That is only a few minutes less than the MacBook Pro M1’s 14:08 duration.

MACBOOK PRO 14-INCH (2023) WI-FI 6E

Supporting the 6GHz band and up to double the speed of the previous Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E is compatible with the MacBook Pro 14-inch 2023. I observed fast downloads in the 400 Mbps range over my home internet connection when I linked the laptop to a TP-Link Deco XE75 Wi-Fi 6E mesh router, but uploads were just 20 Mbps.

Similar findings were obtained by the MacBook Pro M1 Pro and M2 Max models in different places; however, further testing will be necessary to determine the exact impact of Wi-Fi 6E.

MACBOOK PRO 14-INCH (2023) WEBCAM

Though it still has the same 1080p webcam as the 2021 model, the MacBook Pro 14-inch 2023 has a slightly better image signal processor that improves image quality, particularly in low light.

I photographed the two images above under identical settings. The shot of the MacBook Pro M2 Max model is on the right. In addition to capturing a richer red and a deeper blue in my shirt and sweater, the latest MacBook Pro also manages to reduce noise in the picture.

Although there isn’t much of a change, it is better.

MACBOOK PRO 14-INCH (2023) VERDICT

Because of its M2 Pro CPU, the MacBook Pro 14-inch 2023 once again raises the bar for laptop performance. At least until we can test PCs with 13th generation Intel Core CPUs, it outperforms the competitors running Windows. Particularly for demanding jobs like picture and video editing in Photoshop and Premiere Pro, the M2 Max is significantly quicker. Moreover, the M2 Max’s graphical capabilities far surpass those of the M2 Pro.

The MacBook Pro 14-inch 2023 has an amazing 14 hours of battery life, even with the performance bump. For the money, no other laptop has this mix of performance and durability. Additional improvements include the quicker Wi-Fi 6E and a more competent HDMI connector.

So, are you a good fit for the MacBook Pro 14-inch 2023? If you’re ready to pay at least $1,999, I would say yes if you want something really strong yet portable. While the MacBook Pro 13-inch with M2 costs $1,299 and lasts for almost 4 hours longer on a charge, this model is undoubtedly speedier. The MacBook Pro 16-inch, on the other hand, has the same features overall but is worth acquiring if you truly want a larger screen and a design with a little bit more thermal headroom for sustained performance. It begins at $2,499, though.

The MacBook Pro 14-inch 2023 is the best system available if you’re seeking to move from a previous model, but I wouldn’t say it’s quick enough to justify going over the M1 Pro model.

Conclusion
